It was September 2008; we were fresh, new first years; and it was raining.
At any other school, I believe, we would’ve done any number of things to seem cool while we sussed each other out. But at Wellesley, we—one Caroline Tall’s First-Year Mentor Group—raided recycling bins for cardboard, cut holes into trash bags, and decorated our personalized suits of armor, for we would be sledding down Tower Green.
Scientifically-minded, we thought we’d need the plastic, but the cardboard ended up plenty slippery on its own. We pushed each other down that giant hill again and again. We were drenched. We were delighted.
We were real friends.
And, of course, we went sledding again the next time it rained. No armor required.
