A womans laughs as a person in a poncho and sombrero and mask sits on her lap.

In my Spanish 101/102 courses with Profesoras Verónica Darer and Nancy Hall, I was empowered by the phrase cómo se dice – “how do you say.” This phrase was key to my survival diving into a brand new idioma and a semester abroad in Púebla, México, where Profesor Carlos Vega taught me: “la llave de la vida es flexibilidad” – “the key to life is flexibility.” I am indebted to my science professors like Glenn Stark and Julia Miwa for their patience and flexibilidad as I struggled through medical school prerequisites while distracted, in the best of ways, by my Latin American studies major (why did Profesor James Oles’ Mexican art history courses have to be so enthralling?). Now 20 years post-graduation, I ask: cómo se dice thank you for this indescribably enriching Wellesley experience that empowered me to be the Spanish-speaking physician I am today? De veras, no hay palabras.
