Jade Zhu '21

I'm currently working in Somerville as a Research Associate at Boston Meats! We are a tech startup aiming to recreate real meat-like texture for the next generation of alternative meat products. You can find me in the lab producing protein and polymer scaffolds using our novel fiber spinning platforms, prototyping and helping with the development of potential food products - think pulled pork!

Hello! I’m Jade Zhu from the class of 2021, and a potential neuroscience major and computer science minor. I have just joined the Tetel Lab this spring and will be at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN over the summer with our collaborators, Dr. Nicholas Chia and Dr. Marina Walther-Antonio. I’ll be working on the e-Nose component of the Wellesley-Mayo Women’s Health Study to identify chemicals in the samples collected to study how diet, exercise, and even mood can affect the vaginal microbiome. These biomarkers may ultimately help with the early detection of endometrial and ovarian cancers. I’m excited to be able to travel to Mayo and conduct research in the lab for the first time, and hope to continue doing research in neuroscience while integrating skills I learn from computer science.

I grew up in Cincinnati, OH for the first half of my life, but moved to Shanghai for 2 years and then Beijing for 7 years, where I completed middle and high school. Outside of the lab, I love baking healthy desserts and experimenting with new recipes, strength training and yoga, filming YouTube videos, and spending time with my family. I am also an avid nut butter collector, and I enjoy strolling through grocery stores (specifically Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods).
