1980

The Class of 1980 celebrated Commencement on Friday, May 30, 1980.

Addressing the graduates, their friends and families, and the Wellesley community were Marivic B. Mabanag, student speaker; Garry Trudeau, creator of Doonsbury cartoon strip and commencement address speaker; and Wellesley College acting President Dr. Carol Johnson Johns.

Though we are not able to share Garry Trudeau's speech to the class of 1980, we would like to acknowledge a famous humorous quote of his regarding commencement speeches in general. He once said that "commencement speeches were invented largely in the belief that outgoing college students should never be released into the world until they have been properly sedated."
