Sumie Seo ('27)

Miss Sumie Seo, later Mrs. Sumi Mishima, attended Wellesley as Class of 1927. She came to America after graduating from Tsuda College. Before coming to Wellesley, she studied at Dana Hall in Wellesley, Massachusetts.

After Wellesley...

  • Taught at Tsuda College
  • Married Mr.Hajime Mishima, Professor of Chinese studies, and had four children
  • English translation of a volume of legal documents of 18th/19th century Japan (1968, Society for International Cultural Relations)
  • Translated many books for Iwanami publishing in the Foreign Rights Department, and translated for Kokusai Bunka Shinkokai (International Culture Foundation)
  • Published 2 autobiographies in English: "My Narrow Isle" (1941) and "The Broader Way" (1953)
