Reviewing and Interviewing Candidates

Student Employee Eligibility

Students who would like to work on-campus must be a Wellesley College student currently enrolled in courses. In addition, students cannot be studying abroad or on a leave of absence for the time they are working. Students with work-study are given priority for on-campus positions. Students who work in remote based positions must reside on campus or in the state of Massachusetts.

Work-Study

Work-study based aid is distributed to Wellesley students based on a number of factors. Student Financial Services awards two types of work-study, Federal Work-Study and Wellesley Work-Study. Students with either work-study award are prioritized for on-campus positions, especially during select time periods. However, students are not guaranteed an on-campus position nor are they required to work on-campus.

Work-study is not disbursed to the student's account and does not reduce the tuition bill. Instead, students are paid for their work via direct deposit. The way to receive these funds is to be hired, work, and submit time. Students can choose to meet with Student Financial Services at any time to transfer their award amount to another type of aid (generally loan). International students are only eligible to work in on-campus student employment roles.

Reviewing and Interviewing Candidates

The hire process creates a job for students within Workday, allows them to be paid and creates a record of their employment experience. Before hiring students, you’ll have the opportunity to review their application materials (resumes, cover letters, etc.). You are also able to view students who have work-study to prioritize them in your hiring.

Reviewing Candidates

Hiring Managers can begin to review candidate materials as soon as students apply. To review candidates, Hiring Managers will need to navigate to the position and click on “Candidates.” From here, you will be able to look at each candidate’s materials. However, the job requisition must be posted for a minimum of seven days before beginning the hire process. Specifics about reviewing candidates, including how to review work-study status can be found in the documents below.

Interviewing

Students with work-study should be prioritized as candidates for positions. The purpose of the phone interviews are to identify candidates that meet the position requirements and bring relevant skills to the position. Interviews will need to be scheduled outside of Workday usually through a phone call or email.

Before you have the interview, consider the setting, interview questions and your ideal candidate qualifications. We’ve created a guide for supervisors on how to interview students from scheduling the interview to offering positions.

When you are ready to begin developing questions for the interview, think about the aspects of a candidate that you would like to know more about. Ask yourself if there are certain nonnegotiable qualities students must have to be successful in the position. Develop your questions around these skills while allowing candidates to share their experiences. Below you will find a sample of interview questions created specifically for prospective student employees.
