BitLocker Drive Encryption is replacing PGP Encryption for College-owned Windows computers.
Symantec has discontinued our version of PGP desktop encryption, so we are preparing to move College-owned Windows computers to Bitlocker, a data protection feature already integrated with the Windows operating system that addresses the threats of data theft or exposure from lost or stolen computers.
Bitlocker provides a better experience - NO MORE:
- logging into a PGP screen with a passphrase in order to get into the computer
- creating and remembering 5 security questions/answers
- extra software to install
- impact on computer performance
Bitlocker also does a better job of allowing users to run all Windows Updates to better stay up to date with Windows security and feature updates.
LTS will be doing outreach during the Spring 2023 semester to expand our outreach for converting PGP to BitLocker, but you are welcome to reach out to the Help Desk if you'd like to be contacted for this transition now.
