matlab

Beginning in 2016, Wellesley College has a TAH site license for Mathworks MATLAB, a data analysis and visualization tool, providing both instruction and research unlimitted licensing.

2017-2019: MATLAB 2017a is installed in SCI classrooms and labs. Faculty who need a different version installed in a classroom or teaching lab, please email classrooms@wellesley.edu with the version information and location.

You may download and install whatever version is compatible with your computer's operating system, and has what you need for functionality and/or compatibility with another computer.

Annual Re-Activation

If you installed MATLAB previously on your own computer, each summer you need to re-activate the software. Go to the Help menu in MATLAB, select Licensing, then Activate Software. Follow the prompts on your screen. You may need to quit MATLAB and launch it again afterward for the license expiration warning to go away.

Included with our license are the following:

  • MATLAB
  • MATLAB Compiler
  • MATLAB Compiler SDK
  • Bioinformatics Toolbox
  • Computer Vision Tool Box
  • Control System Toolbox
  • Curve Fitting Toolbox
  • Data Acquisition Toolbox
  • Database Toolbox
  • DSP System Toolbox
  • Partial Differential Equation Toolbox
  • Image Processing Toolbox
  • Instrument Control Toolbox
  • Mapping Toolbox
  • Neural Network Toolbox
  • Optimization Toolbox
  • Parallel Computing Toolbox
  • Partial Differential Equation Toolbox
  • Signal Processing Toolbox
  • SimMechanics
  • SimScape
  • Simulink
  • Simulink Control Design
  • Stateflow
  • Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox
  • Symbolic Math Toolbox

Download the installer and Activation Key
  1. If you do not yet have a Mathworks Account using your Wellesley email address, create one
  2. If you have not done this previously, get the Activation Key from the academicstore > software network share
    1. Computer must be on the Wellesley Secure wifi, or on the Wellesley wired network, or, if off campus, on the VPN
    2. On a Mac, go to Finder > Go > Connect to Server, smb://academicstore.wellesley.edu/software
On a Windows PC, go to Start > \\academicstore.wellesley.edu\software
    3. When prompted for credentials, use wellesley\username, with your Wellesley username, and your Wellesley password
    4. Students: open the "students" folder, then the matlab student activation key document
Faculty: open the "facstaff" folder, then the matlab facstaff activation key document
    5. Copy the Activation Key so you can paste it below when needed
If you have problems getting to the Activation Key, reach out to Wellesley's Computing Help Desk.
  3. If you have not done this previously, associate the Activation Key to your Mathworks Account:
    1. Go to the License Center: mathworks.com/licensecenter.
    2. Click "Add License" in the upper right hand corner. (Note: this needs to be done at most once a year; if you are re-installing MATLAB, your license is already associated with your mathworks account.)
    3. Choose "Associate by Activation Key" and click Continue.
    4. When prompted to do so, enter the Activation Key that you copied above.
  4. Go to: mathworks.com/downloads/web_downloads/select_release
  5. Click the download button for the current release, or select a previous version if needed for compatibility.
    • For example, a Mac must be running at least macOS 10.12 (Sierra) for r2018b, and for macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) you must install at least r2018a.
  6. Click the installer button to download the correct installer for your computer.
Install and Activate

1. Locate the installer you downloaded in a file browser. It should be located in the default download location, unless you specified another location. The name of the installer file is:

• Windows: matlab_<release>_win64.exe
• Mac OS X: matlab_<release>_maci64.zip

Where <release> represents the release number, such as R2015b or R2014b.

2. Double-click the installer file you downloaded in the previous step.
  • Windows: The Windows Self-Extractor runs, and then the installer starts.
  • Mac OS X: This action extracts the files and creates another folder called matlab_<release>_maci64, where <release> represents the release number. Inside this folder, double-click InstallForMacOSX to start the installer.
3. In the MathWorks installer, select "Log in with a MathWorks Account" and follow the online instructions.

4. When prompted to do so, select the license you want to use.

5. Select the products you want to download and install.

6. After downloading and installing your products, keep the "Activate MATLAB" checkbox selected and click Next.

7. When asked to provide a user name, verify that the displayed user name is correct. Continue with the process until activation is complete.

If you have concerns about how slowly MATLAB launches on your computer, Mathworks has some suggestions.

Questions or concerns about the MATLAB site license, including help installing on a computer that is not able to be online to activate, may be addressed to the team at LTSsoftware@wellesley.edu.  For help with the online installation outlined on this page, you may contact Wellesley's Computing Help Desk. You may also reach out directly to Mathworks technical support M-F 8:30am to 8:00pm at 508-647-7000.
